Hello Summer !These past few months has been a firestorm of activity around Logos Form and Report Manager, and if you haven't visited us lately then there is a lot happening to spark your interest.  Here is a brief summary of what is new!

Logos Form and Report Manager

We've just released LFRM 4.2, the last of the major releases before we start migrating towards Joomla 1.6.  Previously known as Database Query and Logos Query Manager, Logos has helped thousands of people over the past five years make dynamic Joomla websites by making form and report generation easy without sacrificing power.  With our grid display, one can easily edit data like one does in a desktop spreadsheet.  See for yourself on our demo website, http://demo.ourdatasolution.com .

The new release offers several new features, one of the most notable being the new PDO interface for connecting to various databases such as SQL Server and Oracle. We've also revised the Application Wizard for generating complete applications in a single screen, and we've added features such as the Numeric Filter, the Grid Print Button, and the Export Toolbar which makes exporting data into CSV or XML easier than ever. The Logos Family

Over the past few months we've been doing some serious work on developing Logos, and now there are three different versions for different users:

• Community Edition is free and for beginners,while the
• Express Edition offers an improved Application Wizard for intermediate users, andour
• Professional Edition is the full-featured release of LFRM for serious web developers.

If you haven't used Logos in a while, you can download the Community Edition for free from the OurDataSolution website. Welcome to LFRM 5 and Joomla 1.6

Seven years ago we started work on a tool that could let users search databases via the web. The idea was that most of the time people want to perform simply queries to access basic information, and you didn't need an expensive data portal to do this.

Today, Logos Form and Report Manager (LFRM) makes database integration simpler than ever, and unlike a lot of other form tools, Logos provides you with special features that let's you work with data directly. Using Logos, you can build entire applications, and hundreds of websites use Logos for some of their most important features.

Currently we're developing LFRM and have just uploaded the second Release Candidate to the ourDataSolution website. You should check it out. LFRM5 is available as a free download to anyone within their support subscription period for Logos Professional. A release of Logos Express will be made available later this year.

New Features in LFRM 5.0

OK enough of the suspense - here is what you can find in Logos Form and Report Manager 5 !

Joomla 1.6 Integration

Our new version of Logos works natively with the new Joomla 1.6 platform, now available as Release Candidate 1. Joomla 1.6 offers many sophisticated features such as enhanced user groups and profiles, access control lists for security, and nested categories for articles, all of which have been greatly anticipated by the Joomla Community.

Output and Export

In addition to the standard web interfaces, you can also use Logos to fetch data in a variety of formats, including XML, CSV, and now RSS. Just select the desired formats the Export Toolbar in the Action Parameters. These settings also control access to the data so that unauthorized parties cannot export the data.

Access Controls

Our new version of Logos tightly integrates with the new Access Control Lists offered by the Joomla Content Management System. You can restrict access to an application or specific action to users within your custom access group. Or, you can generically restrict access to certain purposes ( Search, Add, Edit, etc…. ).

Wizard Oriented

Working with databases is traditionally a very difficult task requiring a lot of technical skill, but the new version of Logos let's normal users create and maintain sophisticated forms and reports with just a few clicks of the mouse. Using the Data and Application Wizards, you can create an application to search, add, and manage records in a MySQL database in just minutes.

Database Connectivity

More sophisticated will enjoy the benefits of Logos Professional, which allows one to work with the data directly using the Standard Query Language, or SQL, the most popular language for databases. Using Logos, you can connect to a variety of popular databases systems, including MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MS Access.

ODBC Support

New to LFRM is a new driver for ODBC connections, used by services such as Access, Excel, and Microsoft SQL Server. The new driver will let you connect to your ODBC data source, list available data resources, and select specific fields to use in your applications. With the revised Data Wizard found in Logos5, you can also configure these fields for use in the Application Wizard.

Other New Features in LFRM 5

Yes, there's more, a lot more. Here is just a short list of new features that you can find in Logos5.

• New Administrative Welcome Screen and Icons
• New Themes, and tighter styling between Forms and Grids
• Date format defaults to Joomla dates
• Form Confirmation Dialog
• Load Multiple Applications or Actions from Menu Item ( no need for content plugin )

Sounds Good ! What Now ?

If you are considering building a new website then we strongly recommend you consider Joomla 1.6 and Logos5. Although currently a Release Candidate, we suspect that most of you will be able to launch the new website by the time that J1.6 final has been released. If you work on J1.5, then you will need to upgrade shortly after launch.

If you have an existing website then we don't recommend upgrading to Joomla 1.6 immediately. However, you still may be able to integrate Logos 5 using a separate installation of Joomla. When you upgrade your full site, these forms and reports will already be there waiting for you.

In the coming months we'll also update our documentation for Logos5 and will upload more videos for our tutorials.

The LFRM Family

As you may know, there are three different versions of Logos Form and Report Manager for different types of users and requirements:

• Community Edition is free and for beginners;
• Express Edition offers full-featured wizards for beginner and intermediate users;
• Professional Edition is the full-featured release of LFRM that allows one to configure specific actions outside of the wizards.

As of November 2010, Logos5 is only available as the Professional edition, but we will release the Express and Community versions soon.

We've updated our demo website to showcase some of the work we're doing with Logos 5 running on Joomla 1.6 . Although you cannot log into the administrative section, you can browse some of our sample applications that we've already converted to the new system.
